Ha Si Phu, Grant Awarded 1995
In addition to throwing you in prison, there are plenty of ways for the Vietnamese government to make your life a nightmare. Hà Sĩ Phu has experienced most of them. Despite grindingly persistent attempts to silence and intimidate him, Hà has managed to keep publishing his essays on democracy, smuggling them out via friends who secretly photocopied and distributed them, and more recently, managing somehow to keep his website updated. Hà estimates that he has been interrogated by the police 400–500 times.
